23 Sep DAİRE ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM INTRODUCTION DAYS AND CONTEMPORARY ART MEETINGS

The launch event was organized on September 19-22, 2019 at İzmir Center of Architecture with the title “daire Artist-in-Residence Program Introduction Days and Contemporary Art Meetings”.
daire Artist-in-Residence Program Selection Committee Evaluation Meeting was held on September 19th during which the applications for the open call for participating artists-in-residence were evaluated and 3 artists for each of the 9 cities were selected. Followingly, daire Artist-in-Residence Program Coordination Meeting was realized with the participation of the Provincial Associates. This meeting was realized with project beneficiaries, two provincial associates from 8 target cities. The participants exchanged their experiences in their regions in the framework of the project; the art scene in their respective cities and collaboration areas were discussed, the results of the open call were shared with the associates.
The opening session was also on September 19th, with an audience of 200 people from CSOs, public sector, initiatives, artists, academics, students and the public in general. Opening speeches were held by Ceyhan Çiçek – İzmir Representative of Directorate for EU Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Turkey, Ayşegül Kurtel – President of K2 Contemporary Art Association and Vasıf Kortun – Curator, Arts Critic and Lecturer.
On September 20th, two sessions were realized with the title “Influence of Initiatives on the Contemporary Art Scene of İzmir”, moderated by two different academics. Participants were representatives of art initiatives in İzmir: 49A, Büyük Siyah Kapı, Darağaç, Karton Kitap, LOKALL, No:238, Açık Stüdyo, İzmir Culture Platform Initiative, karantina, Spaces of Culture, Monitor İzmir, NomadMind/ Living Room, Shelter Artists Run Space and Yüksek Oda. The speakers shared their own experiences of being an initiative and their ideas about the topic.
Followingly, Varol Topaç – Yatoo – Global Nomadic Art Project (GNAP) Turkey Coordinator made a presentation titled “Yatoo – Geumgang Nature Art Bienial and International Artist-in-Residence Program” and shared his own experiences about artist-in-residence programs. Necmi Sönmez – Independent Curator, Düsseldorf, presented his ideas on artist-in-residence programs and their interaction and influences in cultural context. İnci Eviner – Artist made a presentation with the title “Artist-in-Residence Program and Center-Periphery Relation” and shared her own experiences as an artist-in-residence in different locations in the world. Tuna Ortaylı Kazıcı – Manager for Projects Abroad, İstanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, gave information about Cité Internationale des Arts – Artist-in-Residence Program in her speech. Discussions with the audience regarding the nature and different practices of artist-in-residence programs were very fruitful.
On September 21st, two sessions were realized with the title “Contemporary Art Scene in the provinces of daire Artist-in-Residence Program”. In the two sessions, associates and beneficiaries from the 8 target cities of the project (those except İzmir) gave information about their cities and the independent and/ or institutional contemporary art scene – actors, activities, audience, collaborations, etc. – in their cities and shared their experiences. The audience had a chance to get an idea about the situation in those provinces and ideas about possible collaboration areas were formed.
Followingly, Miha Kelemina – Head of World of Arts School for Curatorial Studies and Critical Writing, SCCA-Ljubljana Center for Contemporary Arts, made a presentation titled “Artist-in-Residence Programs in Slovenia, Metelkova and SCCA”, giving the audience a chance to have a comparative understanding of the contemporary art scene in regard to artist in residency programs and different practices around the concept.
After that, two sessions were held with the title “Artist-in-Residence Program Implementations, Problems and Suggestions for Solutions”, moderated by an academic & artist. The panelists were İnci Eviner – Artist, Halil Altındere – Artist, T. Melih Görgün – Artist, Curator, Consultant, Academic, Seyhan Boztepe – President of Troya Culture Association, Academic, Gizem Aksu – Choreographer, Dancer, Lecturer and Cansu Çakar – Artist. The panelists from different parts of Turkey shared their experiences, impressions from their own perspectives. They put forward the problems of artist-in-residence program implementations and suggested solutions for them.
On September 22nd, the final day of the event, an Evaluation Meeting was realized with the beneficiaries and the Provincial Associates of daire Artist-in-Residence Program. In this meeting, participants shared their impressions, experiences from the beginning to the end of the whole event as well as discussing the project activities in all the 9 cities.
